Homage to juniper: how Jon Hillgren set out to make one of the world’s best gins and succeeded.

Working as a bartender in London in the late s at the start of gin’s renaissance, Jon Hillgren fell in love with the spirit’s classical juniper-forward flavour.

He dreamed of creating a gin that was among the best in the world and eventually started the search for a site to build a distillery in his Swedish homeland.

When he and his wife bought a historic farm in Dala in the beautiful solitude of the High Coast of Sweden, he quickly realised it felt right to build the country’s first dedicated gin distillery there.

After several months of experimentation, Hernö Gin was born in Jon explains: “I had my vision of the flavour clear and, quite early in the process, I was close. But it needed some fine tuning before it was ready to launch.

“My goal was to create a gin that was among the best in the world but that the company would grow so quickly was beyond my wildest dreams.”

Jon’s goal was realised when he perfected Hernö Gin, a gin he describes as “true to heritage, juniper predominant, yet crisp and floral. The fact that our water is so pure is a

    Hernö Gin

Hernö gin— or as known in its long form as Hernö Swedish Excellence Gin— is made in Dala, just outside the city of Härnösand, Sweden. And at the time of launch Hernö distillery was &#;The Northernmost Gin Distillery in the world.&#;*

Two botanicals not often seen in gin appear in Hernö gin.

Meadowsweet: Has a subtle. pleasant aroma, sort of similar to almond. Used in wines, jams and potpourri, but most pertinent to the gin Meadowsweet is traditional component of Scandinavian Meads.
Lingonberries: also known as Cowberry in the states, this tart, currant-like berry is probably best known as the red jam sold in every Ikea everywhere.

    Tasting Notes

Hernö gin has a hint of juniper and an astringent berry-like flavor. Sweet smelling, not too intense. The taste is complex with an emphasis on fruity notes. Up front, jam and vanilla. Sweet creamy, pine and juniper build, come in later. Lemon cream pie with spicy notes of coriander. Just a touch grassy, like a fresh floral meadow. The finish is long and fruity, vanilla and tart berries. Occasionally giving off a note similar to that of fruit loops cereal, but decidedly more sophisticated, I assure you. Smooth and finishes

Hernö Brenneri is located in the scenic east lands of Sweden in Härnösand, and if you haven&#;t heard their name in the world of gin, you&#;re missing one of the most creative and accomplished gin-first distilleries, no just in Sweden, but in the world.

Hernö Batch 1 is Hernö Gin&#;s contribution to That Boutique-y Gin Company&#;s introductory line of spirits which feature experiments, sketches, and novel creations from some of the world&#;s best and most creative distilleries. Of the Grace J. Ward illustrations on all of the Boutique-y Gin Company&#;s bottles, this one might be my favorite which seems to show the grupp building barrels out of juniper bark for their Juniper Cask Aged Gin.

    Tasting Notes

The nose is ganska floral, even more so than some other gins in the Hernö line. Hernö Batch 1 has some heady top notes of violet, pine blossoms and tart berry; with a slight, sweet, pollen-dusted hint of honeysuckle.

The spirit has a lovely richness and warm, thick mouthfeel. Pine and pine-forward juniper early, with custard, cranberry and coriander notes merging mid-palate. Towards the end, there&#;s a beautiful note of fresh blueberry sylt with a hint of huck
