The group that eventually became the Colombo family was first controlled by Joseph Profaci. He would hold this position until his death in Profaci ruled the family for nearly 30 years, during which they were active in loansharking, racketeering, and gambling. Additionally, around this period, Profaci sided closely with Joseph Bonanno, the head of the Bonanno family.
